As fall unfolds in the city, vibrant colors fill the streets, celebrations are in full swing, a crisp chill sets in– and perhaps a touch of stress. We encourage you to take a pause and soak in the beauty of the season.

October brings midterms and the lingering pressure of assignments, and while the initial frenzy of the semester has slowed, the pressure can still feel overwhelming. As a transfer student last year, I remember how chaotic it all felt. This season, however, brings the chance to pause, breathe, and recharge – a much-needed opportunity to regain balance and stay grounded.Whether through books, fashion, music or self-care, finding moments of joy and tranquility is key. Here’s our advice on how to fully embrace the magic of this fall season:

Diving Into New Reads at Book Culture, 536 W 112th Street

Nothing says fall like cozying up with a great book, and I’m setting aside time to visit Book Culture, the beloved Morningside Heights bookstore and favorite among Columbia students. Reading has always been my go-to for relaxation, and I’ve got my eyes on three captivating novels that are sure to enrich my evenings:

  • Trust by Hernan Diaz – Recently honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, this novel takes us through four gripping, interconnected narratives set against the backdrop of New York City’s Wall Street Crash. It’s a compelling exploration of power, love, and society’s fragility – perfect for those long, chilly evenings when all you want to do is get lost in a great story.

  • Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez – After falling in love with Jiminez’s writing in Just for the Summer, I couldn’t resist picking up another one of her novels. This heartwarming story, filled with cozy autumnal vibes, offers the perfect escape into a delightful meet-cute romance.

  • My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante – A moving exploration of friendship and the resilience of platonic bonds, this novel resonates with me deeply. Its themes feel especially relevant as I begin a new chapter alongside my co-presidents and our close-knit circle at Columbia HY. It’s a reminder that our strongest connections carry us through the most hectic of times,

Fall Fashion Feels

Fall isn’t just a season; it’s a style moment. The crisp air calls for layering – think bold jackets, standout trousers, and statement jewelry. Every fall outfit carries a sense of empowerment, transforming even the simplest looks into something special.

And of course, it’s finally boot season! Though I’ve been known to rock boots in the summer (sweaty, but worth it), fall means comfort and style, especially when paired with black floral lace tights. You’ll often find me and my co-president, Sasha, unintentionally twinning in pleated skirts and knee-high buckle boots—our go-to look, and we’re totally here for it.

New Music to Vibe To
If you know us here at Columbia HY, you know we’re obsessed with house music. This summer, you couldn’t scroll through Instagram without seeing videos of Keinemusik – a Berlin-based music collective – dominating everyone’s stories. We’ve been loving their eclectic mix of melodic house & techno and their afro house hits, with Adam Port’s single “Move” being the highlight of the summer.

This fall, I’m counting down the days for their upcoming single, “Say What.” Their beats always hit just right, and I can’t wait to add this to my study break playlist for some much-needed vibes. Sometimes you just have to take a break from Folklore, even if just for a moment.

Slowing Down and Savoring Fall

Amidst the hustle of city life and pressures of looming assignments, don’t forget to take time for yourself. Fall offers the perfect backdrop to unwind and find moments of calm. There is a quiet beauty in slowing down, and we hope you’ll take time to appreciate all the season has to offer.
